Captain Phillips (2013)

The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama. [imdb]

Nominated for 6 Oscars:
Best Picture
Best Supporting Actor: Barkhad Abdi
Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Editing
Best Sound Mixing
Best Sound Editing

What starts as a terrible film (could that first scene in the car have been written any worse?!), quickly becomes a very engaging one, mostly due to Paul Greengrass's very well-chosen directing style. Though some wouldn't agree, I appreciated the cinematography and the editing too.

Barkhad Abdi gave an ok performance - ok, bordeline amateurish, nothing more. This nomination of his could've gone to someone more deserving. Tom Hanks gives a really good performance (too bad he wasn't nominated), but not really career best. As I said: to me, the star is the director.

My rating for the film: 8/10.
